​Dr Dan Cleall
Dr Dan Cleall is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist employed by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. His current clinical position is with the Lewisham Community Forensic Team. In his role, Dr Cleall manages a large caseload of patients with complex mental health needs and associated risks to others. Dr Cleall regularly assesses new patients who have been referred for forensic community care coordination or who require specialist risk management advice and consultancy. He has practised regularly as an expert witness since 2020.

Dr Cleall is the mental health representative for Lewisham MAPPA (Multi-agency Public Protection Arrangements). He is also an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry. Dr Cleall is approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA) as a medical practitioner with special experience in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorder and has Approved Clinician status under the Act.
Dr Cleall studied medicine at the University of Leeds, graduating in 2013. Following his foundation medical training, Dr Cleall completed his Core Psychiatry training on the Maudsley Training Programme and his Higher Forensic Psychiatry Specialty training was on the South London Scheme. In addition to his medical degree, Dr Cleall holds an undergraduate degree in Primary Health Care and a postgraduate master’s degree in Mental Health Law.
Dr Cleall’s prior psychiatric experience includes roles in general adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, and adult mental health and learning disabilities. As a Forensic Psychiatrist, Dr Cleall has worked in high and medium secure hospital services with both male and female patients. He also has experience working within prisons, a specialist trauma service, community forensic services, and a sexual behaviour service.
Dr Cleall has completed specialist training in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders and personality disorders. He is also trained in assessing violence risk, the risk of sexual violence, and identifying psychopathy.
Dr Cleall provides regular teaching to medical students, post-graduate psychiatric trainees, and Associate Hospital Managers. He regularly delivers medicolegal workshops to trainee forensic psychiatrists and acts as both a clinical and educational supervisor within the NHS.
EXPERIENCE OF GIVING EVIDENCE
Dr Cleall has experience of providing reports on the instruction of the courts, solicitors, and Parole Board in a variety of criminal, family, and civil cases. He has given oral evidence to Crown Courts, Parole Boards, and First-Tier Mental Health Tribunals. Reports and oral evidence are regularly provided both in the course of his daily clinical work and as an independent expert.
CASES UNDERTAKEN
Dr Cleall has accepted instructions in a wide variety of criminal cases, including serious violence, drug offences, arson, sexual offending, and murder cases. These cases have been heard at a variety of courts. Instructions have included fitness to plead and effectively participate, capacity to form intent, insanity, automatism, and sentencing recommendations. He also accepts instructions in civil cases, in the course of which he has completed reports assessing mental capacity, capacity to litigate, and personal injury.
